REGULATIONS
Regulations
These instructions outline the basic principles for the satisfactory installation of your
Hamer stove. Some modi昀椀cations may be required to suit speci昀椀c local site conditions.
However, in all instances, the installation must comply with all local regulations, including
those referring to national and European standards, need to be complied with when
installing the appliance
For installations in England, Wales, and Scotland, Approved Document J is of particular
importance. This document covers combustion appliances and fuel storage systems and
can be downloaded from the planning portal www.planningportal.co.uk/applications/
building-control-applications/building-control/approved-documents
Other documents of relevance include Approved Documents L1A and L1B, which deal
with the conservation of fuel and power. Additionally, the Domestic Heating Compliance
Guide is a useful reference for installers.
In addition to these documents, the installation must also meet the requirements of:
• BS 8303: Code of practice for the installation of domestic heating and cooking
appliances burning solid mineral fuels.
• BS EN 15287: Design, installation, and commissioning of chimneys and 昀氀ue systems
for solid fuel appliances.
Legal Requirements
The installation of a stove is classi昀椀ed as noti昀椀able building work under the Building
Regulations for England and Wales. This means that it is a legal requirement that the
installation must either:
• Be carried out with approval from Local Authority Building Control, or
• Be installed by a Competent Person registered with a Government-approved
Competent Persons Scheme.
Failure to comply with these regulations can result in the installation being deemed
unsafe and potentially illegal.
