TROUBLESHOOTING - APPLIANCE
Troubleshooting - Appliance
Symptom: Inside of Stove and Glass Dirty
Cause
Wood moisture level above 20%
Appliance run at low temperature, promoting
tar and smoke
Loading stove when 昀椀rebox temperature is too
low or starving fuel of air
Solution
Use wood with a moisture content below 20% to
reduce tar and smoke buildup.
Operate the stove at a higher temperature for
short periods during each use to burn off deposits.
Avoid loading fuel onto a 昀椀rebox that is not
suf昀椀ciently hot, and ensure adequate air昀氀ow
during operation.
Symptom: Strong Smell After Lighting
Cause
Paint coat is curing on stove
Creosote being produced in the 昀氀ue due to
wood moisture level above 20%
Continuous use at low temperature, promoting
creosote buildup
Twin wall 昀氀ue insulation has become damp
inside
Atmospheric moisture
Solution
This is normal during initial lightings. Ventilate the
room well and, if possible, move to another room
while the curing process completes.
Use wood with a moisture content below 20% to
reduce creosote production.
Operate the stove at higher temperatures for
short periods during each use to burn off deposits.
If the smell is continuous, have the 昀氀ue or chimney
system examined for leaks or moisture ingress.
If the smell disappears quickly, it may be due to
atmospheric moisture. If not, check for potential
leaks in the chimney or 昀氀ue.
Symptom: Chimney Fires
Cause
Tar has formed due to burning wet wood or
running the appliance at a low temperature
General lack of chimney cleaning
Solution
Use dry wood with a moisture content below 20%
and operate the stove at higher temperatures
periodically to prevent tar buildup.
Ensure the chimney is regularly swept and
inspected to prevent tar and soot accumulation.
Immediate Actions During a Chimney Fire:
•
Close the appliance air controls fully and ensure the door is securely closed to starve the chimney
昀椀re of oxygen.
After a Chimney Fire:
•
•
Have the chimney or 昀氀ue system inspected and swept by a professional to ensure it is safe for
continued use.
Consult your installer for further advice and to address any underlying issues.
