CHIMNEY REQUIREMENTS
Flue Pipe and Chimney Access for Cleaning
Both the chimney and the 昀氀ue pipe must be accessible for cleaning. If any part of the chimney or 昀氀ue
liner cannot be cleaned through the stove (with the baf昀氀e removed), a soot door must be installed in a
convenient location to enable proper chimney sweeping
Vertical Rear Flue Adaptor Access for Cleaning
If installing the stove with the Vertical Rear Flue Adaptor, this allows the stove to be positioned further
into the room, away from the rear wall. While most modern chimney sweep rods can clean through the
adaptor, it is recommended to install a sweep access point on the pipe connected to the adaptor. Vertical
Rear Flue Adaptor can only be installed in a non conbustible setting.
Flue Clearance to Combustible Materials
To ensure safety during the installation of 昀氀ue pipes, it is crucial to maintain the appropriate clearance
from combustible materials. The required clearance depends on the diameter of the 昀氀ue pipe and the
type of system used.
1. Single-Wall Flue Pipe:
For a single-wall 昀氀ue:
• If the 昀氀ue pipe has a 150 mm diameter, the minimum clearance from any combustible material
should be 450 mm (3 times the diameter of the 昀氀ue).
• If the 昀氀ue pipe has a 125 mm diameter, the minimum clearance must be 375 mm (3 times the
diameter of the 昀氀ue).
2. Twin-Wall Insulated Flue Pipe:
•
•
For a twin-wall insulated 昀氀ue, the insulation allows for reduced clearances:
For both 150 mm and 125 mm diameter 昀氀ue pipes, the clearance from combustible materials can
typically be reduced to 50 mm to 100 mm, depending on the manufacturer's speci昀椀cations.
Flue Draught Requirements
For the stove to operate ef昀椀ciently and safely, it is essential that the chimney produces an adequate
draught to clear combustion gases from the stove and vent them safely outside. The draught, or air昀氀ow
within the chimney, is in昀氀uenced by the height and diameter of the chimney, as well as external
conditions like temperature and wind.
Minimum Draught Level
•
The stove requires a minimum draught of 12 to 25 Pa (Pascals) to safely vent combustion products.
Draught Stabiliser
•
•
•
If it is determined that the chimney produces excessive draught, a draught stabiliser should be
昀椀tted. Excessive draught can cause the stove to burn too quickly, wasting fuel and reducing ef昀椀ciency.
A draught stabiliser is installed to regulate the air昀氀ow in the chimney, maintaining optimal stove
performance. However, note that installing a draught stabiliser may affect the requirement for the
permanent air supply into the room where the stove is 昀椀tted.
In such cases, refer to Approved Document J for information on the necessary ventilation
adjustments. You may need to install additional air vents to ensure the room has adequate air昀氀ow,
especially when a stabiliser is used.
