CHIMNEY REQUIREMENTS
New Chimney Installations
If there is no existing chimney in the property, you will need to install a suitable 昀氀ue system to ensure
safe and ef昀椀cient venting of combustion gases. There are two main options for new chimney
installations:
1. Solid Fuel Compatible Prefabricated Block Chimney:
A prefabricated chimney system, designed speci昀椀cally for solid fuel appliances, can be used in properties
where a traditional chimney is not available. These systems are modular and designed for easy
installation, but they must be compatible with solid fuel stoves and meet the necessary performance
standards for heat resistance and durability. An Isokern Pumice system would be the best choice due to
the insulating properties of Pumice. Please note Clay or Ceramic liners can create a cool upper internal
temperature which can lead to condensation problems, especially if the liners are not back insulated.
2. Twin-Wall Insulated Stainless Steel Flue:
Alternatively, a twin-wall insulated stainless steel 昀氀ue system that meets BS 4543 standards can be
used. Twin-wall 昀氀ue systems are particularly well-suited for solid fuel appliances like stoves and offer
excellent insulation to maintain 昀氀ue gas temperature, ensuring a stable draught and ef昀椀cient combustion.
This option provides 昀氀exibility, as it can be installed through walls, ceilings, or externally along the side of
the building.
IMPORTANT If connecting twin-wall insulated stainless steel 昀氀ue directly top of the stove, it may
prevent the lid from being moved to access the standard draught testing point. In such cases, a new 昀氀ue
draught test point must be installed in the 昀氀ue pipe to allow for accurate 昀氀ue draught testing, Many twin
wall manufactures produce starter lengths where you can do this.
Flue Diameter
Whilst a 6” (150 mm) 昀氀ue or liner is recommended for optimal performance, a 5” (125 mm) 昀氀exible liner
may be used if the stove burns only approved smokeless fuels or seasoned wood logs. A rigid-to-昀氀ex
adaptor is required to connect the liner to the appliance or connecting pipe. At no point should the 昀氀ue
diameter fall below 125mm, and it must not exceed 200mm to ensure proper draught.
Flue Pipe Connection
A short length of rigid 昀氀ue pipe (minimum internal diameter of 125 mm) can be used to connect the
stove to the chimney but must not serve as the complete chimney. The 昀氀ue pipe's diameter must not be
smaller than the stove’s 昀氀ue outlet.
The connecting 昀氀ue pipe must comply with Building Regulations Approved Document J:
Horizontal 昀氀ue pipes must not exceed 150 mm in length.
If the 昀氀ue pipe enters the chimney or 昀氀ue liner at an angle, the pipe end must remain at least 76 mm
away from the side or rear walls of the chimney.
Bends in the 昀氀ue or chimney must not exceed 45 degrees, and 90-degree bends are not permitted.
Important If connecting 5-inch to 6-inch rigid 昀氀ue pipe adaptor is used directly of the stove, it may
prevent the lid from being moved to access the standard draught testing point. In such cases, a new 昀氀ue
draught test point must be installed in the 昀氀ue pipe to allow for accurate 昀氀ue draught testing
Sealing the Connections
•
It is critical that all connections between the stove, 昀氀ue pipe, and chimney or 昀氀ue liner are airtight to
prevent leakage of combustion gases. Use sealing rope, clamping rings, and 昀椀re-resistant cement
to ensure a secure, leak-proof seal at all connection points.
