CARBON MONOXIDE REQUIREMENTS
Placement Guidelines
Ceiling-Mounted Alarms:

Position the alarm at least 300 mm away from any wall.
Place the alarm between 1 metre and 3 metres horizontally from the appliance.
Wall-Mounted Alarms:
Install the alarm at least 150 mm from the ceiling.

If placing the alarm on a wall with windows or doors, position it as high above these as possible while
maintaining a distance of at least 150 mm from the ceiling.
Ensure the alarm is between 1 metre and 3 metres horizontally from the appliance.

Rooms with Sloping Ceilings:
Place the alarm towards the highest side of the room to improve gas detection
ef昀椀ciency. Ensure it is installed at a height suitable for testing its operation.
Additional requirements for installations in Wales
A carbon monoxide alarm is required to alert occupants to the presence of carbon monoxide in the
following:
1. In every space (including connected spaces for example attached garages and loft spaces) containing
a 昀椀xed combustion appliance (including a 昀椀xed 昀氀ued combustion appliance used for cooking), and
2. In high-risk accommodation, that is, a bedroom or principal habitable room (e.g., living room), where a
昀氀ue serving a combustion appliance passes through these rooms.
